Taking the step to reach out to a therapist for help can be difficult and intimidating. Knowing this, my approach is to always spend time ensuring you feel comfortable with whatever struggles are bringing you to therapy.

I am a very engaged therapist and am aware of the importance of us working collaboratively to help you with the issues bringing you to treatment. Whether you’re looking for help with a specific problem, have a sense that something is “off”, or you are feeling stuck moving forward in life, I can help.

Areas of Practice

Anxiety/Worry

Are you concerned that you worry too much? Struggling to identify whether the amount you worry is “normal” is a common concern people have coming into therapy. Together we can explore whether your worry is excessive. We can also look at the ways in which anxiety may be negatively impacting your daily life and causing you unnecessary emotional stress.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an empirically validated treatment for anxiety that I have successful experience using with individuals in treatment.

CBT treatment is also beneficial in treating other Anxiety Disorders, including OCD, Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and perfectionism.

Relationship/Couples Issues

If you are feeling dissatisfied in your relationship, it may be time to consider couples counselling. Many couples struggle with unhappiness or poor communication for years before deciding to work on their relationship. Over time it is quite common for couples to struggle with ineffective communication and feelings of being stuck in unhealthy patterns. Together we can break free from unhealthy communication patterns and re-ignite your connection and commitment to your relationship.

Depression

Are you struggling with low mood? Depression can present with many different symptoms, including sadness, low motivation, low energy, irritability and at times thoughts of suicide. Seeking help for depression can be overwhelming, especially if you tend to isolate yourself.

Acknowledging your depression is the first step in helping you begin to feel better. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an empirically validated treatment for depression that I have successfully used to improve people's lives.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) typically involves problems in relationships, self-image, emotion regulation, and impulse control. One of the primary features of BPD is an intense fear of abandonment or more generally feelings of loneliness. Emotions tend to fluctuate and can be felt really intensely.

If you have struggled long term with a distorted self-image (e.g. "I don't know who I am or what I like"); a life-long pattern of unstable relationships, especially romantic ones; and a history of impulsive or self-destructive behaviours, including self-harm, unsafe sex, and eating disorders you may have BPD.

There are specialized treatment options available to you if you believe that you may be struggling with BPD or emotional regulation issues. I have worked with many individuals who have found treatment to be very effective in managing their BPD symptoms. Treatment includes use of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills and insight oriented work.

Self-Esteem

Do you struggle with low self-esteem? Everyone has negative thoughts about themselves at times, but it can become problematic if left unchecked. If you find yourself struggling with a lot of self-criticism and difficulty accepting compliments or positive feedback from people then you may struggle with poor self-image.

Together we can explore the negative “critical voice” and way in which you think about yourself, your relationships with others and the world around you.  We can work to improve your self-compassion and break the cycle of negativity.

 Grief, Loss and Bereavement

Are you struggling to figure out whether your grief is “normal”? Loss is something that touches most people at some point in their lives. Bereavement and grief encompass a wide range of feelings from deep sadness to anger. The process of adapting to a significant loss varies widely from person to person.

Although grief is a normal process, at times it can become overwhelming and debilitating. If you are feeling unable to move forward following a loss, feel that you have become depressed or perhaps even traumatized by the experience, it is time to seek professional help. Together we can explore your grief and help identify the obstacles preventing you from moving forward to the best of your ability.
